The Bay Citizen obtained a data set of all the accidents in the Bay Area from the previous 5 years involving bicycles and it came with an amazing amount of detail. We decided to map it and visualize the most interesting pieces.
Trouble spots – we showed the intersections that were statistically accident prone. We broke it down by time of day to see when riding a bike was the most dangerous.
Bike paths – outlined existing bike paths and used the data to propose new ones that could avoid accident hotspots.
Encourage dialog – many accidents involving bicyclists are never reported. We offered a way for people to tell their story and help paint a better data picture.
